5 Important Tips for Building a Successful Machine Shop

25 juillet 2023

Competition is tough when you’re just getting started or want to expand your machine shop. That’s good and bad news.

Competition is good news because it means the market is strong and your services are needed. But there’s a downside. To be competitive, you need to streamline, make the best use of your resources, and keep up with the latest technology.

Here are 5 tips to follow to help your machine shop prosper.

#1. Choose Which Niche to Serve

A small shop can make a name for itself by serving a small slice of the market. Do a few things very well, meet deadlines and provide excellent customer service to a small segment of the market, and the word will get around.

#2. Expand Slowly

Work with the equipment and staff you have. When you streamline production, you can keep your hydraulic presses working throughout the day. This is much more efficient than buying a new one before you have the customers to support it and the workers to operate it.

#3. Diversify

It’s smart to make the most of what you have and growing at a slow but steady pace. At the same time, take a few risks. For example, maybe you’ve been given the chance to take on a contract for a plastic fabrication job, even though that’s not your specialty. If it fits in with your expertise and you have the equipment, give it a try. Diversifying helps you keep work flowing through the shop even when your regular customers are cutting back.

#4. Use Technology

Read trade magazines, go to trade shows and workshops. Stay current with what’s new and exciting in the industry. Keep an open mind about upgrading your equipment. New machinery is expensive, but can actually make you more efficient. For example, with a new hydraulic press, you might be able to break into a new segment of the market. Your competitors are researching new technology. Don’t be left behind

#5. Offer Additional Services

Offer value-added services to your customers. At each of the many stages that make up the machine shop process, find helpful features to provide your customers. If you make tubing for clients, offer fasteners, a logical addition. Or offer soup to nuts service for jobs, like pick-up and delivery.
